Chapter 444
"Dr. White! The gun... it's jammed!" The young soldier was drenched in sweat, his fingers trembling.
Luna White was packing her medical kit, preparing to return to the medical unit. The past two days had been relentless with the influx of wounded, leaving her no time to rest. Without looking up, she replied casually, "Then fix it. It's not like I broke it."
Her tone was as light as if she were discussing the weather.
The soldier gaped. But you're the one who dropped it carelessly just now!
Before he could protest, hurried footsteps approached.
"Dr. White! Emergency!" Xiao Hu burst in, panting, his face deathly pale.
Luna's heart clenched. "What happened to Captain Smith?"
"He... he charged into the minefield!" Xiao Hu's voice shook. "Said he had to rescue the wounded. We couldn't stop him!"
The roll of gauze slipped from Luna's fingers and hit the ground. A minefield? Even the engineers avoided that death trap!
Without another thought, she grabbed her emergency kit and sprinted outside. Xiao Hu revved the motorcycle, speeding toward the scene with her clinging to the back.
From a distance, she spotted Andrew Smith's figure moving cautiously along the minefield's edge. He had already pulled one wounded soldier to safety and was now heading back in.
"Stop!" Luna screamed, her voice cracking.
But Andrew didn't even glance her way. Step by painstaking step, he inched closer to the two remaining casualties.
Ten meters... eight... five...
Then, his body froze.
Silence fell over the field.
"Oh no..." Xiao Hu turned ashen. "The Captain stepped on a mine."
Luna's vision swam. She knew exactly what this meant—one wrong move, and everything within several meters would be obliterated.
"Let me through!" She lunged forward.
"No!" Xiao Hu yanked her back. "You'll only make it worse!"
Luna stomped in frustration. Her supernatural ability could heal injuries, but it couldn't bring back the dead!
In the center of the minefield, Andrew stood perfectly still on one foot, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He knew his situation better than anyone—the slightest shift in weight could be his last.
To make matters worse, the two wounded soldiers lay just ahead, one already unconscious.
"Captain!" The soldiers at the perimeter had tears in their eyes. Some began unbuckling their gear, ready to risk their lives to reach him.
"Stand down!" Andrew barked, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade. "That's an order!"
His command left no room for argument.
Luna bit her lip hard enough to taste blood. You fool! The engineers could've handled this—why play the hero?
Then, she noticed Andrew slowly raising his hand, flashing her their secret signal: Trust me.
Tears spilled down her cheeks. Trust him? Right now, all she wanted was to drag that reckless man out and throttle him!
But for now, she could only watch helplessly as he faced death alone.
Time crawled. Each second stretched into eternity.
Then—Andrew moved!
